Flood worst since 49 years ago, say Limbang residents

-

LIMBANG: The flood caused by heavy rain since Tuesday until yesterday has been described as the worst since 49 years ago.

Residents of Kampung Berawan here said the heavy downpour had caused the main roads and residential areas to be f looded, something they had not seen or experienced ever since the roads were upgraded.

They also said the rain had caused a stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway to be inundated with flood water as deep as two feet, rendering it passable by heavy vehicles only.

According to the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, besides Kampung Berawan several other areas and roads were also flooded and rendered impassable.

Among the affected roads were the one leading to the junction of Kubong, Medamit and main roads in Kampung Berawan, Kampung Medait, Rumah Ejau, Rumah Ugak Lubok Simpor, Munti Ulu Lubai River and Taman Damai Housing Estate.

Meanwhile, Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah advised all relevant government agencies to be prepared to be mobilised in view of the bad weather warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.

Hasbi himself yesterday went to the ground to monitor the flood situation, helping the police regulate traffic at the inundated stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway.

Accompanying him was Limbang deputy district officer Hamidah Halpi.

Random checks found some sections of the main roads along Pan Borneo Highway which were previously impassable to light vehicles clear as of 3pm yesterday.
