Look to Gavin for inspiration, junior golfers told
KUALA LUMPUR: Junior golfers should look at Gavin Kyle Green, the winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit 2017, the first Malaysian golfer to do so, for inspiration to achieve success in the sport.
Professional Golf Association of Malaysia ( PGAM) chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said Green, whose string of wins this year make him the country’s number one player, is the best example of young talent .
“He (Green) achieved so much at such a young age and what made us proud is that he staved off the challenge from players from Asia and Europe.
“This achievement is remarkable for a national gol f player as competition to reach the top spot in the Asian Tour is difficult,” he said after launching the PGAM Tour 2018 calendar at TPC Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Green, who is ranked 169th in the world, was also named as the Best Player of the Asian Tour 2017 at the end of the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta on Sunday.
Green,23, also won in the longest shot category with an average 287 metres tee- off stroke.
Meanwhi le, when asked to comment on PGAM’s achievement this year, Ahmad Sarji said he was delighted to see the improved performance of the junior players on the PGAM Tour.
“I am very proud of the success of PGAM in 2017 as we produced talented junior players such as 18 year- old Shahriffuddin Ariffin who won the Order of Merit.
“This is a record and I hope he and the other junior players can follow in the footsteps of the senior players who have made a name on the international stage.”
Ahmad Sarji also hopes the Women’s PGAM Championships 2018 offering a total prize of RM350,000 would attract more women golfers to participate in the national women’s golf tournament. — Bernama
