MIRI: A Christmas road safety campaign was launched here yesterday.

Road users are advised to be more attentive of each other and be patient as every festive season, more vehicles will be on the road, going back to their hometowns. Thus in ensuring all road users arrive at their destinations safely, please be mindful and careful. Statistics from the police showed a slight increase in the number of road accidents here during a similar campaign last year compared to during the previous year’s campaign.

Last year, 137 cases were recorded here during ‘Op Selamat Krismas’ compared to 131 cases in 2015.

“Road users are advised to be more attentive of each other and be patient as every festive season, more vehicles will be on the road, going back to their hometowns. Thus in ensuring all road users arrive at their destinations safely, please be mindful and careful,” advised Erick Chin, special assistant to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who officiated at the event on Lee’s behalf.

In a speech read by Chin, Lee called for road users to pay attention to weather changes, especially during the rainy season, which could cause slippery road conditions.

He also asked road users to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and to take extra care at accident-prone spots.

Chin later distributed adult motorcycle helmets and goody bags to road users.

Among those present at the event were Miri Resident Sherrina Husaini and Miri Mayor Adam Yii.

The campaign was organised by the Miri Division Road Safety Council in collaboration with the Miri Resident’s Office, Road Safety Department, police, Road Transport Department, Sarawak Shell Berhad, Information Department, Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Public Works Department and local community leaders.
