Behind this achievement is a culture of safety inculcated at all levels from employees to contractors at IOT sites and even local community in surrounding areas where IOT operates.

KUCHING: The Independent Oil Terminal ( IOT) here has achieved 7 million man hours without loss time injury since it began operating ten years ago, due largely to its solid culture of safety inculcated with dedicated effort of its management.

Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Hipni, in acknowledging the outstanding achievement, pointed out that industrial safety and health is an important sector to ensure the smooth and successful functioning of a company and industry.

“Behind this achievement is a culture of safety inculcated at all levels from employees to contractors at IOT sites and even the local community in surrounding areas where IOT operates,” he noted.

“No doubt the ‘ Safety first and always’ mindset which the company adopts is crucial to avoid any mishaps and incidents,” he added.

Major Accidental Hazards ( CIMAH) organised by IOTM, a subsidiary of Senari Synergy Sdn Bhd, at a hotel here on Thursday.

He also commended Senari Synergy and its Group of Companies which have contributed tremendously to the socio economic wellbeing of the local communities.

“The function of IOT is very noble. While carrying a heavy responsibility in handling, storage and distribution of fuel and LPG products in Sarawak, this has in turn created many employment opportunities for the locals,” he said.

“Hopefully, more facilities will be set up and developed in the future to generate income for the locals as well as encourage entrepreneurship,” he added.

Hazland is also proud to note that Senari Synergy has embarked on its Permata Synergy programme where children below 12 years of age within Demak and Bako areas have been adopted to provide for their educational needs.

Earlier, Senari Synergy Group managing director Jefri Ahmad Tambi emphasised that the health and safety has always been a top priority at the company and adopted at all of its subsidiaries.

“We at Senari are serious and committed when it comes to safety issues and our seriousness about compliance to rules and regulations is testimony of our achievement (7 million man hours without a lost time injury). After all, it is no easy feat,” he said.

“Without a high safety performance, the disruption will affect 30 per cent of consumers including petrol and diesel as well as households when cooking gas is cut off,” he added.

He noted that the company won a silver award at its inaugural participation in the Chief Minister Industry Excellence Award this year. It also won the gold award at the national-level Productivity and Innovation Conference and Exposition held in Genting Highland.

On the seminar, he hoped that industrial players and local communities in particular around the areas of its operations would benefit from gaining knowledge on steps and measures to be taken during incidents and emergency.

The audience was briefed on the roles and functions of the IOTM that plays a critical role in ensuring consistent supplies of the petroleum products to customers in the southern region of Sarawak.

The seminar was held to fulfil the statutory requirement under the Occupational Safety and Health ( Control of Industrial Major Accident Hazards) Regulations 1996 that is regulated by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.
