MIRI: The Miri Hospital Run 2018 at 6am on April 8 will raise funds to upgrade facilities and services for patients.

Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong said 1,500 participants are expected to join the run organised by the Bulatan Park Runners Club and the Fire and Rescue Department.

“The main objective of this run would mainly focus on raising enough funds for our small projects such as Seahorse Sutera Support Group, which was set up for breast cancer patients, organ donation kiosk and display boards around the hospital,” he told a press conference.

He explained that the Seahorse Sutera Support Group provides breast cancer patients with consultation services.

“Though it is just the beginning, however, we are confident that it would be very useful to our patients. Therefore, to provide better and wider service, more funds are needed as the consultation is free of charge,” he said.

The organ donation kiosk disseminates necessary information to the public and encourages them to register as donors.

“There are a lot of people who do not understand organ donation and how it can help people. Therefore, the kiosk is to enlighten people with the correct information,” said Dr Wong.

He added that part of the funds raised would also go towards custom-made trolleys for wards.

wards. These are actually not very compatible, as there are a lot of beds, and they could create problems in terms of mobility.

“The smaller sized trolleys could cater for one small ward. More importantly, the speciallydesigned trolleys are much cheaper in price and easily moved around. I am also thrilled to say that an additional feature has been added to the new trolleys – a place for iPads, for doctors and nurses to prescribe medication online right after they have checked on the patients.”

He said this would ensure the hospital offers tech- savvy services and shorten the waiting time for patients.

This year’s Miri Hospital Run raised over RM16,000 for three custom-made trolleys.

Registration for the charity run is now open, with an early-bird price of RM55 before Feb 25, while the normal rate until the deadline of March 3 is RM65.

The run categories are Men’s Open (11km), Women’s Open (11km), Men’s Veterans (11km), Women’s Veterans (11km), Family-Boys (4km), Family- Girls (4km), and Fun Run (4km).
