Bureau forwards request for drainage, roads in Krokop to be upgraded
MIRI: Krokop, the oldest residential area here, needs a comprehensive development plan to upgrade its drainage system and roads.
Miri Sibuti Parliamentary liaison and public complaints bureau chief Erick Chin said the bureau had received a number of public requests to upgrade the roads, particularly the drainage system, in the area.
Recently, Chin made a visit to the area to get a better picture of the problems faced by the Krokop residents.
During the visit, he found the drainage system in the area had not been upgraded for years.
In addition to that, he said lack of maintenance and attention had caused some of the drains to be unable to serve their purpose.
He cited the concrete drains along Krokop 2 road where part of the drain had completely collapsed due to soil erosion.
He said he had forwarded the matter to Miri City Council ( MCC) for it to take immediate action to rectify the problem.
Though the matter might look petty to others, he said he was very particular about the poor maintenance and the old design of the drainage system because during heavy downpours the low- lying areas in Pujut were frequently hit by flash floods.
“Being the oldest neighbourhood in the city, it is timely for Krokop to have a master plan to upgrade the existing old basic infrastructure such as drains and road.
“The master plan must consist of development plan both for short term and long term for the area.”
Other than Krokop, he noted that many areas in the city, particularly the villages, had poor drainage.
“The relevant agencies must come up with systematic monitoring to ensure the drainage system is in good condition and working well.”
