Concrete drain under RTP to mitigate flash floods in Limbang

-

LIMBANG: The government has implemented the Concrete Drain Project to overcome the problem of flash floods in the district.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said the project under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) had been initiated at Kampung Pemukat and Bukit Kota and will continue to Buangsiol Road and the affected areas. He pointed out that flash floods are caused by drainage problems even in big cities.

“With the completion of concrete drains, flash floods during heavy rain especially during high tides would not be prolonged,” he said when met by the media on his work visit to Kampung Bukit Kota yesterday.

Also present were Limbang District Officer Jamalie Busri, Divisional Public Works Department (PWD) engineer Noor Ismail Razali and heads of other government departments.

Earlier, Limbang was hit by flash flood especially near Limbang Plaza, Limbang Hospital and Taman Damai.

In the meantime, he wanted repair work to be carried out as soon as possible, including identifying sink holes along roads at Kampung Bukit Kota.

“We do not want repair work done only on the surface but also on the ground beneath the surface of the affected roads,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman added that the road repair works will take three to six months by the same contractor who implemented the Bukit Kota Riverine Conservation Project costing RM2 million.

The conservation project was implemented in 2015 as a remedy to landslide problems in the area which caused some residents to be evacuated.

The Bukit Kota assemblyman also wanted PWD to put road signages prohibiting heavy vehicles from using the affected roads while repair work is being carried out.
