Gira: New farmers’ market in restructuring of Selangau town
SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) is working on restructuring Selangau town including relocating its existing farmers’ market to a new site.
According to Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira, he has allocated RM300,000 for the construction of a new market and another RM150,000 for a public toilet in the town.
He added that the fund came from his Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project 2018.
“The existing farmers’ market located by the riverbank will be redeveloped into the Selangau waterfront,” Gira told thesundaypost yesterday.
He was reacting to president of Pemansang Dayak Selangau Branch, Seman Agan’s call for the government to upgrade and expand the Selangau farmers’ market to cater to the growing number of farmers and traders.
Seman had said Dayaks in Selangau were mostly involved in farming and many of them sold their produce at the farmers’ market.
As such, he claimed that the existing market was overcrowded.
He hoped that the government could upgrade the farmers’ market which was getting too cramped and unable to accommodate the growing number of traders and farmers.
Moreover, according to Seman, a more spacious market could reduce congestion as presently, some traders resorted to selling by the roadside which pose a danger to both traders and road users.
