Vast improvement in electrical industry and related technology
SIBU: The electrical industry and its related technology has changed and evolved for the better all these years.
Pointing out this, Acting State Director of Electricity Supply, Chang Seng Yu said the way of utilising electricity has also changed such as going for energyefficient buildings to reduce energy consumption and operating costs.
“With the government embarking on the digital economy and the concept of smart cities, electrical devices such as electrical meters, switches and equipment can be connected and controlled via smart devices like smartphones.
“This advancement in technology means that as contractors and competent persons, you are the ‘frontliners’ to install and execute work that call for a set of new knowledge, skills and expertise,” he said at the 39th anniversary dinner of the Electrical Association of Sarawak and Sabah (EASS) at a hotel here on Saturday night.
The occasion also witnessed EASS’ electrical vocation skills graduation ceremony cum Chinese New Year Dinner 2018.
Chang said his department has a role to produce competent electrical persons so work was properly executed to ensure electrical safety.
To date, there are 22 accredited institutions conducting various electrical courses such as wireman and chargeman courses, having produced about 6,000 competent electrical persons in the State.
He said EASS in collaboration with various institutions, produced four batches of wiremen, numbering 133 in total.
The association was active in organising activities for members to enhance their knowledge of the electrical industry, making it the most active electrical association in Sarawak, if not Malaysia.
The association, he said, would continue to play a role in contributing to the electrical sector.
“My department will continue to engage with the association so that the policies, guidelines and processes introduced are practical and user-friendly for the needs of the industry.
“We will engage with contractors on new advanced technological skills needed by the industry.
“We will also seek cooperation from contractors to provide attachment opportunities for new trainees to acquire competency skills and experience.
“We are optimistic of the association’s role in the electrical industry. With contributions that meet the expectations of members and stakeholders, the association will go far beyond celebration of its 39th anniversary,” he said.
EASS’ long history proves it has fulfilled the expectations of members and other stakeholders and remains relevant in meeting their needs all these years, Chang pointed out.
Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh was guest of honour at the auspicious occasion also attended by EASS chairman Hii Hua Chuon, president of The Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia, Ir Yong Ah Huat; chairman of Sibu Municipal Council, Datuk Tiong Thai King; and organising chairman Tiong Chiong Kiing.
