TVET students repair 22 houses in two villages
LUNDU: Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Datuk Anthony Nogeh Gumbek has ticked off the opposition for persistently trying to paint a negative picture of government’s initiatives in the Mas Gading parliamentary constituency.
Nogeh who is Mas Gading MP, disclosed the opposition’s latest attempt was to belittle the initiative by the government to plant the highly-priced Musang King durian and MD2 pineapple in the constituency
He said the opposition should come and see for themselves the benefits of such initiatives meant to improve the people’s income instead of criticising just for the sake of opposing.
“I ensured that village and agriculture roads are built for the convenience of the people. Financial assistance is given to all houses of worship.
“I think the opposition ‘purapura’ (pretend) not to know how these initiatives are benefiting the people,” he said when closing the Touch Point Cabinet Away Day Project by Politeknik Kuching at Dewan Kampung Sebiris, near here yesterday.
The project involved 36 students who are pursuing Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering, doing general and wiring repairs for 22 houses in Kampung Sebiris and Kampung Biawak.
The students, their lecturers and members of Politeknik Kuching Alumni, worked on these houses from Jan7 until yesterday for this project.
Themed ‘TVET Students To Do Community Works’, this project was also supported by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department and the Sarawak Federal Development Office.
Nogeh, who visited some of these houses prior to the function was satisfied with the good quality of work.
He described this as one of the most cost effective projects in the constituency and agreed to extend the project to more villages in Mas Gading so that more people can benefit.
To the students involved in the project, he hoped they had shown their capabilities and believed they have the potential to be contractors.
He said that TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) which remains a priority for both the federal and state governments, continues to receive sizeable allocation under Budget 2018.
“The ongoing Pan Borneo Highway project and other future mega projects in Sarawak would require skilled workforce in related fields such as engineering, maintenance and management.
“I call on polytechnic students and youths in Mas Gading to be aware and seize such opportunities,” he said.
Also present at yesterday’s function were ICU principal assistant director Abang Abd Aziz Abang Abd Rahim, Politeknik Kuching deputy director Jemain Ental, Lundu district officer Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan and Pemanca London Tasin.
