MIRI: Subis District Council yesterday started immediate remedial work after the hill slope eroded at Pantai Tusan in Bekenu in the last few days.

Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus said th e strong waves over the past several days not only eroded some parts of the hill slope, but also destroyed the only footpath leading to the beach downhill.

“Tusan beach is famous for its ‘Blue Tears’ phenomenon as well as its cliff which resembles a horse drinking. The uniqueness of Tusan beach has attracted many people for recreational activities.

“For the safety of beach goers, Subis District Council has conducted immediate temporary remedial works such as covering the exposed eroded area with canvas, installing guard rail along the hill slope, and rebuilding the footpath with another guard rail along it,” she said when contacted by thesundaypost.

Rosey who is also Bekenu assemblywoman said the immediate action though temporary was for public safety to allow relevant authorities such as Public Works Department (JKR) and Drainage Irrigation Department (DID) to study and assess the area.

“A thorough study to identify the type of erosion control system suitable for stabilising the hill slope in Tusan beach area is needed.

“We are in the process of working with DID and JKR to come up with the best solution to this problem.”

For the time being, she asked Subis District Council to put up more warning signages, and for beach goers to be extra cautious when visiting the area.
