KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) recently conducted a Baleh Women Entrepreneurship Programme to empower women folks in the area to take advantage of the business and employment opportunities from the Baleh HEP project - scheduled to be completed by 2025.

According to a press statement from SEB, the programme saw the participation of 30 women who were given insight on how to take part in business activities and the available support to kickstart their businesses.

“My hope is for the participants to make full use of the skills and knowledge learned and start out with small businesses,” said Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang at the closing of the 2-day event.

SEB head of corporate social responsibility (CSR) Jiwari Abdullah meanwhile said he hoped the participants could use the knowledge and skills learnt to their economic advantage, and tap into various business activities of the mega project.

“By working early with stakeholders and engaging them on the requirements, various capacity building programmes for the community have been identified and outlined by SEB.

“Some have been implemented such as technical and skills training for the young, including this workshop which focuses on entrepreneurial development.”

Held in December 2017, the 2day workshop was conducted by Universiti Malaysia Kelantan’s Centre of External Education.

Present at the closing ceremony were SEB senior manager for social investment and community development Joanne Tan Cho Yian, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) director of Centre for External Education Prof Dr Mohamed Dahlan Ibrahim and Sarawak Energy’s community liaisons in Kapit.
