MIRI: SJKC Chung Hua Sungai Lumut in Bekenu still needs RM900,000 for the construction of a new school block to replace the present 50-year-old wooden block which is badly infested by termites.
According to the chairman of the school’s Board of Management, Kapitan Kuan Chui Tho, the school has raised RM100,000 through its 60th anniversary dinner held recently.
“We have also received a grant of RM900,000 from the Prime Minister but we are still short of another RM900,000 because the construction of the new block including all the necessary infrastructure is estimated at RM1.9 million,” he said, adding that the construction work would commence after the Chinese New Year.
He urged corporate companies as well as generous members of the public to donate towards the project, so that the new school block can materialise and be completed as soon as possible.
Kuan said the board has also acquired a permit to collect donations and will be holding more programmes to raise funds for the purpose.
He also expressed his gratitude to Sarawak United Association Chinese Primary Aided Schools board of management for identifying SJKC Chung Hua Sungai Lumut as a school that badly needs upgrading, which enabled the school to receive the special grant from the Prime Minister.
The new building project was approved by the State Planning Authority ( SPA) in June last year but there were a number of processes the project had to go through including planning and fund raising before it could be implemented, Kuan said.
Meanwhile, the new school block will be a concrete building in order to overcome the problem of termites. The single concrete block will comprise 13 classrooms, a teachers’ office, headmaster’s office, science lab, multimedia room, library and school hall.
