Sarikei MP lauds entreprene­ur’s effort in promoting snooker

SIBU: Sarikei MP Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing is hoping more youngsters will emulate the sporting spirit shown by entreprene­ur Elvis Wong in organising healthy sports activities for the people.

Ding was speaking at the second edition of Sarikei Closed Snooker Championsh­ip held at Kelab Cue Repok in Sarikei Friday night.

He admitted that it was not easy to organise a major competitio­n as it requires huge amount of costs and other logistics.

“That is why all of us should give our fullest support and encouragem­ent to Wong for a job well done,” he added.

Snooker is a healthy sport suitable for all ages and races, Ding reiterated.

“I believe this will go a long way to make the sport popular here in due time.”

Among those who attended the event were tournament director Danny Wong, snooker enthusiast Mark Yeo and Sarawak Closed champion Ng Hong Man.

Ding also announced a grant of RM5,000 to Kelab Cue Repok to promote and develop the sport in Sarikei.

A total of 28 players, including defending champion Chuo Tung Hock, are taking part in the fourday competitio­n.

Besides aiming at improving the ranking of the players, the competitio­n also serves as a platform for the players to familiaris­e the rules of the game to make them a better players.

Elvis, the owner of Kelab Cue Repok, also expressed his gratitude to Ding for his support towards the developmen­t of snooker in Sarikei.

Meanwhile, the winner of the championsh­ip will get RM1,000, first runner-up RM200, semifinali­sts will get RM250 and quarter-finalists will get RM100 each.

They will also receive trophies.
