Najib shares memories of Emergency era

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday reminisced on light- hearted moments shared with police personnel during his time as Pahang Menteri Besar.

Speaking at a meeting with over 5,000 police pensioners at Putra World Trade Centre ( PWTC) here yesterday, the Prime Minister said the security forces at that time was hunting down communist terrorist, Chong Chor in the area surrounding Bentong, Pahang.

He said the police advised that his vehicle had three registration numbers for security purposes to mislead the enemy.

“One day while I was attending a seminar in Kuala Lumpur, I was asked by a policeman if the vehicle I was riding in belonged to me.

“I asked why? Because the ( registration) number in front was different, rear was also different. My driver had wrongly placed the front number as CU11, behind was CX3879.

“I would like to commend that particular policeman for being so observant.

“He asked to open the bonnet, there were many more plate numbers inside,” he said and was met by laughter from those present at the function.

Najib became the youngest menteri besar, at aged 29, from May 4, 1982 until Aug 10, 1986.

He said although that particular incident was humorous, he praised the commitment of the police and military personnel in safeguarding national security.

Malaysia would not achieve success as enjoyed today without the sacrifices of security personnel, he said. — Bernama
