Rep suggests promoting tasty ‘Durian Long Lama’
LONG LAMA, Baram: Durians from Long Lama, well known for their high quality and delightful taste, should be promoted and marketed widely.
In making the suggestion, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said ‘Durian Long Lama’ is well liked not only by the locals but also other people from other parts of the state.
“We are proposing to the state government to look at how to turn durians of Long Lama, which have gained popularity for their quality and good taste, into high quality products.
“We aim to continue promoting and selling our fruits and fruit products to a wider market and help boost our economic development,” said Dennis when officiating at the Entertainment and Cultural Night held in conjunction with the inaugural ‘Pesta Penguman Asen’ ( Local Food Festival) at SJK (C) Kee Tee hall here recently.
Hence, Dennis suggested that a durian-based products processing plant be built in Long Lama.
“This is due to the large amounts of durian produced in Long Lama each year,” he said.
On another subject, Dennis said various activities would be planned which would involve the local people.
“We also offer a lot of opportunities to the community to organise activities that will defi nitely get solid support from us (government),” he explained.
Telang Usan district officer Baru Tai, who is also the festival organising chairman, said the inaugural festival aimed at promoting economic growth in the state constituency.
“This initiative is important to provide a platform not only to strengthen relationships but also for promoting agricultural and handicraft products and enhance agro- economic development.
“I would also like to urge the local residents to plant more durians as we would like more people to come here and enjoy their great taste,” he added.
The event themed ‘Eat for Good Health’ was made merrier with dance and singing performances by Iban recording artiste Ricky El and several local traditional dance troupes. Other activities held included blow-pipe shooting, fancy dress contest and lucky draws.
Also present were Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini, administrative officer Louis Michael Balau, Kayan paramount chief Temenggong Elizabeth Deng, Penghulu Desmond Yap Cheng Siang and Kapitan Yeo Kei Siang.
