Contractors want solution on issues in getting CIDB competency certs

-

MIRI: Local contractors are hoping to have two-way communication with the Construction Industry Development Board ( CIDB) with regard to the implementation of the board’s certification of competency for construction workers and site supervisors.

Miri Division Building and Civil Engineering Contractors Association chairman Lai Tze Voon agrees that the accreditation of skilled construction workers and site supervisors is crucial in creating a safe and professional working environment at any site.

“However, the deadline set by the CIDB, which was end of last year, had put a lot of pressure on local contractor companies, who struggled financially and lacked the time to have it (certification) done in time.

“I believe that there are many local companies that have yet to obtain the CIDB certificates for their workers – costly expenses being the main reason, and that they have employed many foreign workers. At the same time, they are also worried about the legal action that would be taken by CIDB, should they (CIDB) find out after inspection.

“Therefore, we are hoping to seek a problem- solving method with CIDB, to resolve the matter as soon as possible,” he spoke at the association’s 43rd anniversary dinner here on Saturday.

In response to this, guest- of-honour Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin pledged to help arrange a dialogue between the association and CIDB.

“A dialogue is very important as it would be able to reach an understanding between both parties, on what can be done such as courses, to increase the quality of skilled construction workers and site supervisors. I would do my best to help them,” he said.

The anniversary dinner also hosted Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting and Miri Mayor Adam Yii.
