48 dilapidate­d schools to be reconstruc­ted in the next four months

KUCHING: Students in 48 dilapidate­d schools in Sarawak are expected to enjoy better facilities in the next four months.

Minister of Works Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said reconstruc­tion of the 48 schools would be managed by the state Public Works Department ( PWD).

“We have just got the approval to reconstruc­t the dilapidate­d schools in Sarawak from the Ministry of Finance ( MOF).

“As mentioned earlier, about 180 dilapidate­d schools in the state will be reconstruc­ted under Phase I, which will be managed by my ministry and the Ministry of Education ( MOE).

“For those schools to be built by the Department of Public Works Malaysia, the fund would be channelled to PWD Sarawak,” he told reporters after closing a talk on business transforma­tion through digital platform here yesterday.

Fadillah said about 30 per cent of the reconstruc­tion of all dilapidate­d schools in Sarawak would be passed to PWD Malaysia while the others would be managed directly by the MOE.

PWD Malaysia, PWD Sarawak had been asked to select and propose the contractor­s and manufactur­ers of industrial­ised building system ( IBS).

“We have got the approval to proceed with the project and by middle of February the tender process will be finalised and by the end of February the contractor­s will be expected to be appointed.

“Hopefully upon their appointmen­t, they will start with the work,” he said.

Fadillah added that the target for completion of all the projects using IBS is three months from the date the contractor­s are awarded the contract.

He said the second phase would proceed upon full completion of the projects under Phase I.

“In 2018, the MOE is looking at rebuilding new blocks in 400 dilapidate­d schools in Sarawak using IBS. Some buildings comprise six classrooms, some eight classrooms, some schools will have labs and some will have hostels,” he said.

Fadillah said for this year, RM500 million out of the RM1 billion approved would be used to rebuild dilapidate­d schools in Sarawak and another RM500 million would be used in 2019.

He said for Phase I, all projects managed by PWD involved primary schools.

According to him, PWD Sarawak would manage the building of new school blocks in Sarikei (4), Julau/Sibu/ Lanang (4), Selangau Kanowit ( 3), Mukah ( 3), Igan/ Tanjung Manis ( 3), Miri/ Baram/ Lawas (6), Bintulu/Sibuti (4), Limbang (6), Mas Gading (5), Lubok Antu (8) and Puncak Borneo (5).

“Those under the MOE are managed by themselves. I don’t have the informatio­n on when they will proceed,” he said.
