KAPIT: A second bridge costing RM20 million will be built across Sungai Yong.

Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said it is part of a package under the Jalan Kapit- Song-Kanowit project.

“A second bridge is to be built side by side with the bridge that has been built. The RM20 million bridge will be built very, very soon because the contractor has been identified and appointed.

“During the briefing in Kapit, we were told the project site will be handed over to the contractor to build the second bridge across Sungai Yong this February,” he told a press conference on Monday.

Nanta was on a two- day working visit to Kapit and Song together with Ministry of Rural and Regional Development ( KKLW) secretary-general Datuk Borhan Dolah and some 20 senior officials to inspect the ministry’s projects.

These include longhouses under the Housing Project for the Hardcore Poor ( PPRT).

“To name a few of these longhouses – Rumah Semut, Rumah Untang Jirau, Rumah William Unchat – have benefited from the PPRT financed by KKLW. Apart from PPRT, we also looked at just completed

At the same time, we also looked at the peoples’ requests for treated water supply to be extended to their areas,” said Nanta.

Nanta and his entourage were also briefed by Song District Officer Jackline August on various KKLW projects in Song District.

He explained that the group also inspected the `alternative’ 21km oil palm and logging road from Tamalat to Ngungun.

“KKLW has already been made aware of the condition of the road. We are studying the proposal by JKR ( Public Works Department) on how much the estimate is needed to upgrade the plantation and logging road that has been used by the people till this time.

“If we could upgrade the road, it would be good enough for these two or three years while waiting for Section B’s ` missing link’ to be built,” he said.

Nanta added that the `missing link’ involved two packages – a 9.6km stretch from Tamalat to Ngungun, and 5.1km from Ngungun bypass.

He said the handing over of the site to the contractor for the first package will be next month, while the bypass project is in the final stage of the negotiations with the contractor.

“Hopefully, we are looking at the end of February or early March – we will be able to finalise the award to the appointed contractor; meaning to say we are quite confident works will begin in March,” he said.

Nanta added the `missing link’ project is to be completed in two and a half years’ time.
