KUCHING: The secretariat of Asian-Australasian Animal Production (AAAP) Congress is now calling for abstract paper submission for this year’s biannual event.

Hosted by the Malaysian Society of Animal Production (MSAP), the congress will take place at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from Aug 1 to 3.

“Various topics relating to animal sciences and aquaculture will be presented, including those on feed and food security, livestock and climate change, animal biotechnology, animal breeding and genetics. As such, the event is seen as a platform for both animal scientists and professionals to meet and discuss current advances and issues,” said MSAP vice-president Prof Loh Teck Chwen via a MSAP press statement issued yesterday.

He also said the event would is highly beneficial to students, technologists, farmers, breeders and those involved in the animal production industry – both directly and indirectly.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister, voiced out his support for the event at a recent meeting with MSAP, stating: “I hope that AAAP 2018 would focus on success stories from other countries as these can be useful to educate and increase exposure to the locals.

“For example, these success stories could be about cattle integration in Indonesia and the downstream activities from the livestock industries.

“Furthermore, topics such as swiftlet farming, rural farming system, artificial intelligence (AI) technology, information technology ( IT) in animal production and precision agriculture, should also be featured in an event such as the AAAP Congress.”

One of the congress’ highlights is a presentation by keynote speaker University of Sydney Associate Professor of Biometry Peter Thomson, entitled ` The Digital Future: The Role of `Big Data’ for Agricultural Development in the Region’.

The 18th instalment of the AAAP Congress this year is expected to gather around 1,000 local and international delegates. It will host a conference, an exhibition and multiple workshops.

The large- scale event is also expected to contribute substantially to the state’s tourism economy.

The AAAP – a consortium of animal production societies – was founded in 1980 with eight charter members namely Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines and Thailand.

Malaysia hosted the first AAAP Congress in 1980.

Later on, the AAAP included Taiwan, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, India, Vietnam, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Sri Lanka and China as member countries.

Participants can now submit up to two original 350-word abstract papers to the congress secretariat before June 15 this year.
