MIRI: Dog owners here are advised to fully utilise the rabies vaccination service currently provided by the Veterinary Department for their pets.

Miri mayor Adam Yii said the anti-rabies vaccination service is available at the department which is located at the ground floor of Tabung Baitumal building at Pelita Commercial Centre.

“The vaccination service is only available on Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 11.30am and the service charge is set at RM25 per dog,” he stated to the media after chairing a full council meeting on Monday.

In view of the on- going war against the deadly rabies disease, Yii said the council was placing emphasis towards ensuring that public places, particularly school areas, are free from stray dogs.

“MCC will intensify the operation to catch the stray dogs at public areas. Any stray dogs found in a public area will be caught and kept for 48 hours while waiting for the owner to claim. Those unclaimed dogs will be put to sleep after 48 hours.”

He advised dog owners to keep their pets within their own house compound.

“Dog owners are reminded not to release their dogs to stray in public places as it may cause safety or create health hazard to the general public.”

He also reminded members of the public to take precautionary measures like avoiding contact with dogs which exhibit abnormal or aggressive behaviour.

They are reminded to quickly wash their wounds under running water and seek immediate medical attention if bitten by dogs.
