Water saving device in new development projects mandatory in Penang

-

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will become the first state in the country to make it mandatory for developers to install water saving devices ( WSD) in all new development projects.

Penang Water Supply Corporation ( PBAPP) chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said the mandatory installation of WSDs would allow more households to conserve water with minimal effort.

“The Penang State Executive Council approved PBAPP’s proposal for the mandatory installation of WSDs on November 28, 2017.

The next step is the necessary legal process for the amendment and the gazetting.

“With the gazetting, the Penang City Council ( MBPP) and the Seberang Perai Municipal Council ( MPSP) will be able to enforce the new regulations.

“The PBAPP will assist in the implementation,” he told a press conference here, yesterday.

Jaseni said the PBAPP had installed various types of WSDs in its building since 2012 and the findings indicated that WSDs could reduce water consumption by between 14 per cent and 87 per cent.

“The automated nature of the WSDs will help to reduce per capita domestic consumption significantly in the long run,” he added.

Essentially, all new buildings would automatically become water friendly buildings as they would be greener and comply with the Green Neighbourhood Planning Guidelines 2012 by the Town and Country Planning Department.

The WSDs are designed to automatically save water without requiring the user to change their daily lifestyle, water usage habits or change the taps, shower heads toilet fittings and urinal fixtures. — Bernama
