SIBU: The government is in the process of renting two shophouse lots behind Oya Road Polyclinic to ease congestion at the clinic.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya who disclosed this yesterday thus called for cooperation from local leaders to convert the two shophouse lots into an annexe.

“This clinic will be used for follow-up cases such as diabetes and high blood pressure because the Oya Road Polyclinic is now very congested with patients numbering between 800 and 1,000 each day..

“We have to reduce the congestion and create more space for the comfort of patients,” he said during a visit to Sibu Hospital yesterday.

Earlier, Dr Hilmi visited Oya Road Polyclinic as part of his working visit here. He also visited Rejang Park 1Malaysia Clinic, Permai 1Malaysia and the Nursing College at Sibu Hospital.

According to the director of state Health Department Dr Jamilah Hashim, there is a need for another clinic in Sibu.

However, to build a new one would take time as approval is needed under the Malaysia Plan, she said.

Dr Hilmi meanwhile said the clinic at Sibu Jaya is in need of improvement.

“I visited the clinic in Sibu Jaya yesterday ( Tuesday) and despite it only two years old, physical defects are visible such as leaking roof, wiring, air- conditioner and so forth. We are very concerned about this,” he said, adding that Sibu Hospital also needed some upgrading.

He commended the local people for being supportive of the government in building heath-related facilities for the people.

“From the 10 1Malaysia clinics in this town, six are supported by the community so the government would not have to rent premises.

“This is a good example and should be emulated by other towns,” he said.

Divisional health officer Dr Muhammad Rais Abdullah accompanied the deputy health minister during the visit.
