Five admitted to Penang Hospital after drinking instant coffee

GEORGETOWN: Fiveindividuals, including two women, have sought medical treatment at the Penang Hospital between Sunday and Tuesday after drinking a certain type of instant coffee which left them severely fatigued.

State Health Department director Dr Wan Mansor Hamzah said the individuals aged between 19 and 62, including two foreigners, were warded for observation and several tests, but three of them had been discharged after their conditions improved.

“Right now, only two men, aged 19 and 45, are still warded at the hospital for treatment and observation.

“They are reported to be in stable condition. No new case or death reported so far involving drinkers of that type of coffee,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

He said various tests on the patients and samples of the coffee were still ongoing and the department would be issuing an official statement once the findings were known.

“The investigation into the incident also involves several other enforcement agencies and the public are advised not to make any speculation or disseminate false information about the incident,” he said.

Yesterday, Bernama reported that two men ended up at the Penang Hospital after drinking a certain type of coffee which left them severely fatigued.

Meanwhile, Penang Police chief Datuk A Thaiveegan said the police had not received any report on the incident from the victims or the hospital.

“We will investigate the incident if there is a report lodged by any parties involved,” he said. — Bernama
