SIBU: Malaysians are advised to vote in a government that can fulfil their aspirations.

In cautioning them against being on the losing side this coming general election, Deputy Minister of Health Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya said they should always bear in mind that they are the ones providing the mandate for any party to form the government, which should be to their own benefit.

“Therefore choose a government that we know can perform and help the people.

“It is the people who will be the victims if they choose unsteady government,” he said when officiating at a gathering with Hospital Visitors Boards and Health Clinic Advisory Panel at a hotel here yesterday.

Meanwhile, he noted that the current ratio for beds in hospitals is 1.95 beds per 1,000 people.

Thus, there is a need to provide more beds in hospitals, especially in view of the increase in the number of patients with noncommunicable diseases, he suggested.

“If we are to follow international norm for hospital beds, we have to provide at least 16,000 more beds to match the ratio of 2.5 beds for 1,000 people.

“That is a lot of money because the rate per bed now is RM2 million. It would cost RM32 billion to provide 16,000 beds,” he added.

At the function, he presented a mock cheque each to Hospital Visitors Boards from Kanowit, Dalat, Daro, Saratok, Sarikei, Mukah, Sibu and Kapit. KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation ( Socso) reminds employers to pay contributions for the Employment Insurance Scheme (EIS) introduced for the first time and effective from Feb 1 to 15.

Socso’s Public Relations Unit said the payment within this period would be for January this year.

“The contribution should be made before or by the 15th of each month to avoid a fine for late payment imposed on employers.

“All workers aged 18 to 60 years are entitled for the monthly contribution at 0.2 per cent of their salary from employers and also 0.2 per cent from the workers themselves.

“Only those aged 57 and have never contributed to Socso are exempted from this protection plan,” it said in a statement.

The EIS is implemented as a social security net for workers who have lost their job to obtain financial assistance and to seek a new job. For more information on the EIS, visit www.perkeso.gov. my/sip or call the customer service line at 1300 22 8000. — Bernama
