ACS calls for establishment of Constitutional Court
KUCHING: The Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) has called for the establishment of a Constitutional Court.
In a statement yesterday, ACS called on the federal government to make a provision for the establishment of the court to protect and safeguard the constitutional rights of citizens from all walks of life.
“Citizens of all faiths could seek legal redress in the civil courts for interpretation of the Constitution if their constitutional rights, for example religious freedom, are infringed upon and they could also apply for judicial review of decisions by public authorities, which affect or impact on their constitutional rights,” said the ACS.
The statement also called the Federal Court’s landmark decision in the M Indira Gandhi case a significant victory for those who uphold constitutional rights to religious freedom and an important milestone for the affirmation of the judicial power of civil courts.
ACS said it warmly welcomed the landmark decision and called for the inalienable constitutional right to religious freedom to be respected and upheld by the authorities.
“The children of Indira are innocent victims of unilateral parental conversion and it is the fervent hope of ACS that she will be reunited with all her children soon.
“No number of words or sympathy could compensate for the heartbreak and anguish Indira has endured for the years of separation,” said ACS.
