Take the Wasatiyyah approach, Muslims urged

SIBU: Muslims here are urged to take the Wasatiyyah approach in an effort to deepen their religious belief and understand.

Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said this (approach) would allow them to be closer to Allah and understand the teaching of Islam better.

“We in the East know that Islam is not like it is in the West. I do not want anyone to have extreme ways to study Tasawuf.

“We must know that Tasawuf is one of efforts to refine the understand­ing of Allah and what he wants,” he said when officiatin­g at the nationalle­vel seminar on ‘ Sufi Menurut Wasatiyyah 2018’ held at Sibu Islamic Complex here yesterday.

Taib also advised Muslims to be careful when studying Tasawuf.

He said Tasawuf was good but they must be careful and not be carried away.

“We want to find more knowledge in ways we carry ourselves in the society,” he said.

Taib hoped the participan­ts would be able to learn, gain experience and improve their understand­ing of Islam.

Islamic Affairs Department (JAKIM) director general Tan Sri Othman Mustapha, Assistant Minister of Rural Electricit­y Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Assistant Minister of Education and Technologi­cal Research Dr Annuar Rapaee and chairman of Sarawak Islamic Council Datu Misnu Taha were among the about 1,000 people present at the one- day seminar.
