Forum on key social issues expects to host 1,000 youths from Kayan community
MIRI: Some 1,000 youths from the Kayan community in and around here are expected to attend a ‘Kebaktian Belia Kayan Sarawak’ forum to address social issues, especially among the rural youths.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said the inaugural event, organised by Peng Belia Kayan Sarawak ( Sarawak Kayan Youth Fellowship) with support from the Sarawak Kayan Association, is specially designed for Kayan youths.
Themed ‘ Kebenaran Meneguhkan Generasi Muda’ ( Truth Strengthens the Younger Generation), the event will take place at BEM Canada Hill Church from March 16 to 18, running from 7.30pm to 10pm daily.
“This is going to be the first big event for the Kayan community especially the youths. It will focuss on issues relating to social ills that are happening in the world today, including among our younger generation from the Kayan community,” said Dennis, who is also Sarawak Kayan Association president, when met by The Borneo Post at a hotel here yesterday.
The assemblyman pointed out that the event would be a timely one to prevent youths from getting too immersed in social issues, which could lure them to social ills including drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.
“With strong support from members of the organising committee, Sarawak Kayan Association and church leaders from among the Kayan community, it is hoped that we would be able to educate and develop our younger generation to become more resilient.
“We are doing our small part in supporting the government’s desire to build a good and healthy nation,” said Dennis, adding that the programme is open to all Christian youths and would be conducted in Bahasa Malaysia.
Organising chairman Pastor Peter Lawai said: “In addition to strengthening the faith among our younger generation, the programme can also foster integrity and competitiveness among them.
“We hope that through the forum, we would be able to produce more youths with high calibre who would become our future leaders, both in the church and in our community.”
Among the activities organised for the three- day programme include a church service, workshops and talks relating to topics on relationship between boys and girls, as well as leadership.
