KANOWIT: The relocation of some 150 traders at the Kanowit Multipurpose Market to a new location at Bungalow Road here went smoothly yesterday.

The process was made easier as the traders had been made aware of the relocation following a notice issued by Kanowit District Council (KDC) before September last year.

Trader Ros Baluh said the new market can accommodate a large number of daily traders – mostly longhouse residents – who come to sell jungle produce and other agricultural products.

common at the previous location.

“So far, this new place is okay for me despite being located quite a distance from the previous market,” she said.

Ros added that a good number of customers had patronised the new market in the morning on the first day of trade.

Her elder sister Mula said traders had agreed to the council’s decision to relocate as they were given the freedom to choose their own trading spot.

KDC staffers, meanwhile, said they had received some complaints from traders who had to rent a van to get to the new location as they did not have their own transportation.

“Some of the traders who don’t have their own transport have complained about having to rent a van to get to the new market.

“In light of this, we allow some of them to trade at the Kanowit Bus Terminal building, but this is only temporary,” said one staff member.
