Association to hold Dyslexia and Smart Phonics Workshop

-

KUCHING: A Dyslexia and Smart Phonics Workshop will be held at the Islamic Information Centre ( IIC) here on March 31 and April 1 from 8.30am to 5pm.

Dyslexia Association of Sarawak ( DAS) president Dr Ong Puay Hoon said the two- day workshop aims to provide participants with an understanding of what dyslexia is as well as to teach them on smart phonics techniques that will enable them to help and teach emerging and struggling readers to learn how to read and write in Bahasa Malaysia.

“Smart phonics or ‘ foniks pintar’ is a structured, systematic and phonics- based teaching and learning programme to help all children – with and without learning problems – to read and write in Bahasa Malaysia.

“It’s cumulative and repetitive features and the use of multiple sensory activities have been demonstrated in several literacy camps, proving that the programme is effective in stimulating reading and writing skills,” she explained.

Ong, who is also the trainer for the workshop, pointed out that participants will be involved in hands- on activities on the multisensory methods during the workshop.

“Hence, pre- school teachers, teachers teaching Bahasa Malaysia in primary schools, remedial classes, Literacy and Numeracy Screening ( Linus) facilitators and officers, school counsellors, teachers of children with special needs and parents are most welcome to join us at the workshop.”

A registration fee of RM300 is applicable for each participant while parents whose child is registered as having learning disabilities need only pay RM200 to register for the workshop.

“The registration fee is inclusive of refreshments, lunch, file, training paper and e- certificate,” said Ong, adding that registration can be made online at https://goo. gl/xNqXFw.
