Rotary clubs from Kuching, S’pore donate books in English to schools
SERIAN: Four Rotary clubs from Kuching and Singapore recently presented almost 2,000 books in English to two schools in Serian under their Books of Hope Project.
The handing over of the books and stationery to SK Lebor Remun and SK Riih Daso was witnessed by Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus as both schools are under his constituency.
The project initiated by Rotary Club Kuching Central, Rotary Club of Singapore, Interact Club of Bukit Gombak Eagles and Rotary Club of Swinburne Sarawak aims to improve the standard of English among the pupils.
It is also to instill good reading habit amongst the pupils and to enhance their level of thinking by reading better quality materials.
John, on behalf of the recipients, thanked the Rotary Clubs saying it was timely with the current move in the state to improve English proficiency among the younger generation.
“English is now one of Sarawak’s official languages, as announced before by the late chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem. Now, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research is actively promoting English in schools all over the state,” he said.
He also informed that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will declare open the Serian-level English Proficiency Programme this Saturday.
Meanwhile,RotaryClubKuching Central president Benjamin Lo and Rotary Club of Singapore president James Lee said this project was aimed at empowering the pupils with knowledge, since knowledge is power.
Both schools, through their headmasters and representatives, also expressed gratitude to the four Rotary Clubs. They also thanked John for selecting their schools to receive the books.
