Proposal for CIDB Miri to be centre for contractors

- By Zaheera Johari reporters@theborneopost.com

MIRI: The local branch of Construction Industry Development Board ( CIDB) can become the centre for more than 2,000 contractors operating within the state’s northern region.

According to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, this division alone houses 1,203 registered contractors, which warrants the need for CIDB Miri to become the central platform for this region.

“We must have a (CIDB) centre in Miri to conduct programmes like training and seminars for the contractors, allowing them to acquire key points for the renewal of their licence.

“The problem now is that they do not have enough points for renewal, as no seminar is conducted here. They need to go all the way to Kuching.

“CIDB should facilitate this and also encourage the contractors to register with it, as well as comply with CIDB’s rules and requirements.

“We must bear in mind that Sarawak is very different from Peninsular Malaysia, particularly in terms of land size. Thus having a centre for each region is something that should be considered seriously,” Lee told reporters after launching CIDB Miri’s inaugural ‘Construction Industry Development Seminar’ at a hotel here yesterday.

Lee, who is Senadin assemblyman, also advised the local contractors to uphold good ethics in their work, such as looking into the welfare of their workers instead of only thinking about profits.

“We want our contractors to have good ethics and be consciousminded when doing any project. Treat your workers well, as a welltrained worker is an asset – they can increase the productivity, which benefits the contractors,” he pointed out.

About 100 contractors attended the one- day free seminar, conducted by CIDB in cooperation with Miri Division Building and Civil Engineering Contractors Association, and Miri Occupational Safety and Health Practitioners Society ( MOSHPS).

The seminar was meant to increase awareness of the roles and development programmes for the construction industry under the purview of CIDB, as well as to explain the procedures regarding contractor’s registration and application for registration of construction personnel through the Centralised Information Management System (CIMS).

MOSHPS’ presented its safety awareness programme.
