The 3-day camp which concluded on April 1, was organised by Curtin Social Ambassador Club ( CSA) for Curtin Sarawak’s students to connect with students from local secondary schools.

Its chairman Chai Chung Yu said in a press release yesterday that the camp has successfully achieved its objective to reach out and help enhance the students’ social ability.

“The camp aimed to benefit the participants through learning outside the classroom and as a break from their hectic academic routine.

“We see this as an opportunity for secondary school students to enhance their skills while interacting with participants from other schools. We hope that they benefited from this camp and put it into good use in the future,” he said.

The participants were from seven local secondary schoolsSMK Chung Hua Miri, Pei Min Middle School, SMK St. Columba, SMK Pujut, SM Sains Miri, Roam Road Secondary School and Tenby International School.

Ten children from Hamidah Yaakup Welfare Complex were also invited to the camp.

Participants enjoyed activities such as the The Big Game, TGE Fun Fair, Life Game and Century Crisis.

According to Chai, these specially designed games which required physical and mental skills encouraged participants to develop leadership, teamwork and critical thinking skills.

The support from Sarawak Oil Palm Berhad who was the main sponsor and other sponsors including Idoll Fashion; Pango; Syarikat A& A Enterprise, Syarikat Lioemas; ASC Videography (media sponsor); Curtin Sarawak and Curtin Student Council (CSC) made the annual camp possible.

Lauding the good effort, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting who was the invited guest of honour at the opening ceremony on March 30, said the camp was also a great way to help youngsters undergo digital detoxification.

“It has become the norm amongst youngsters to have smartphones on their hands at all times. The camp enabled students to put away their mobile devices and connect with people and more importantly, to have fun on the university ground,” said Ting in his opening address.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Deputy Pro-Vice chancellor of Curtin Sarawak Prof Beena Giridharan; Curtin Social Ambassador Club advisor Vivienne Sim; and Sarawak Oil Palm Berhad ( SOPB) Assistant Head of Support and Services Joseph Ling.
