500 athletes, officials for state taekwondo c’ship

KUCHING: About 500 athletes and officials from throughout Sarawak are expected to the take part in the three- day state taekwondo ( WTF) championsh­ip here from April 27.

Accor d ing to Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak (WTF) deputy president and organising chairman Azizul Annuar Adenan, the annual tournament will be held at Dewan SJK Chung Hua No.4.

It will feature both Poomsae and Kyorugi events in various categories for competitor­s aged nine to 16 years and above.

The athletes and off icials represent the 20 affiliated clubs in Sarawak.

“The competitio­n will serve as an avenue for the athletes to gain exposure and experience the actual competitio­n,” Azizul said.

Of f icials and athletes of the affiliated clubs under the Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak (WTF) are eligible to take part in regional events such as the SEA Games, ASIA Games and Olympic Games, as the state associatio­n is a f f i l iated to Taekwondo Malaysia ( WTF), which is a member of the Olympic Council of Malaysia and a member of the World Taekwondo (WT), the world governing body for the sport of taekwondo.

Recently, a delegation from the state associatio­n, comprising its president Mohamad Salleh Sani, Azizul, secretary general Hadysham Junaidi and state technical board chairman Tan Check Joon, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to extend their invitation for him to officiate at the opening ceremony on April 28.
