Third successful organ procurement carried out at Miri Hospital
MIRI: Mir i Hospital has successfully conducted another organ procurement – its third since 2015 – with the assistance of specialists from Kuala Lumpur Hospital ( HKL) and Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
Miri Hospital Transplant Organ Procurement ( TOP) team coordinator Dr Norhuzaimah Julai @ Julaihi said the 38-year- old male donor had been pronounced clinically brain dead on April 11.
“The family of the donor is pleased to donate both kidneys. The organ procurement process was conducted by Miri Hospital TOP team with the assistance of a team from the National Transplant Resource Cent re based in HKL and two urologist surgeons from SGH,” she said in a press statement yesterday evening.
She said the three-hour operation was carried out successfully and both kidneys were obtained at 12.40am yesterday.
“The k idneys had b e en sent to HKL and Hospital Selayang for organ transplant to patients who need them,” she added.
D r No rhu z a i mah s a i d yesterday’s operation was the third organ and tissue donation conducted at Miri Hospital since 2015.
“We thank the donor and his family for the donation as it will give a new ray of hope and expectation to the patients who will receive the organs.
“The National Transplant Resource Centre wishes to promote awareness of organ donation among Malaysians. Donated organs not only can change the life of a patient, but also the family and community.”
She hoped that the public, especially in Northern Sarawak, wi l l be more aware of the importance of organ donation and that more people will pledge to become donors.
