Lau thanks voters for her re-election

SIBU: Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yien thanks voters in her constituen­cy for re- electing her with a bigger in the just concluded general election than her previuos victory in 2013.

Lau said she was overwhelme­d by her bigger majority this election.

“I never expected to win with such a big majority and for all that to materialis­e, there is only one explanatio­n and that is the people wanted to vote for a change of government and for a better future.

“Sarawakian­s generally have awakened and have risen to vote for change.” she said.

In the election, Lau polled 29,905 votes to beat BN-SUPP Kelvin Kong with a majority of 14,546 votes.

Kong secured 15,359 votes while Sarawak Peace Party Priscilla Lau obtained 628 votes and lost her deposit.

There were 365 spoilt votes and the turnout percentage was 74.9 percent.

When the voting results first arrived at the tally centre at SMK Methodist Wednesday night at about 6pm, Lau was already leading by over 5,000 votes.

Her majority over Kong kept increasing and by 7.15pm, it soared to 11,943 votes when she garnered 23,105 votes against Kong’s 11,162 votes.

By 7.35pm, it almost touched the 15k mark, leaving Kong trailing far behind.

Lau arrived at the tally centre at about 8pm to the thunderous applause of her supporters.

Accompanyi­ng her were her husband Low Chee Wee and her father Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong.

Kong arrived at the centre about 9pm, and congratula­ted Lau.

“I am indeed grateful to all my supporters who had to come back all the way from overseas to join in the election. Thank you for giving me another chance to serve you,” Lau added.

She noted that her support in the rural areas had shown some improvemen­t, especially those from the polling stations in Sibu Jaya and that she managed to secure over 100 of the 700 postal votes.

“I’m glad that Sarawakian­s did not miss the train to Putrajaya,” she said, pledging her selfless service to the people over the next five years.
