GE14 results: Voters are now a mature lot, says Ling

MIRI: The result of the 14th general election which favours Pakatan Harapan (PH) shows that voters are now a mature lot.

State Democratic Action Party ( DAP) secretary Alan Ling is relieved that the voters have now responded positively to the PH call for a change.

“They know politics is not about personality but about good policy and good governance,” he said when met during the counting of result for the Miri seat at the civic centre here on Wednesday.

Commenting on the success of PH candidate Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng in retaining his seat with a bigger majority of 13,663 votes, Ling, who is also former Piasau assemblyman, said he shared the same joy as other PH supporters.

He said Dr Teo’s success was a reflection of the people’s rejection of his BN opponent over the past two years of insignificant policy progress.

He added the people did not feel any changes in their life even though they voted BN in the last state election to form the government.

PKR national women vice chief Voon Shiak Ni was also overjoyed with Dr Teo’s win and winning it with a big majority.

In the 2013 general election, Dr Teo won the Miri seat, which was a BN stronghold by defeating Datuk Sebastian Ting who contested the seat in his capacity as political secretary to Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui with a 1,992vote majority.

Voon said the second round of battle between the duo shows that the people here still need him ( Dr Teo) in parliament.

“We started the campaign as underdog but we worked very hard for the GE14. Dr Teo himself has put in a lot of effort during the campaigning period.

“I salute him for his persistence and determination to fight for the seat.”

She added that the fi rst promise PH would do is to abolish the good and services tax (GST) and replace it with the sales and service tax (SST).
