SRU wants to unearth more ‘rugby girls’ in Kapit
KUCHING: The Sarawak Rugby Union ( SRU) looks forward to unearthing female talents in Kapit as plans are afoot for the formation of Kapit Division Rugby Association.
SRU president Richard Song Swee Jin, who disclosed this, said he is planning to meet Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing who is Baleh assemblyman, over the matter.
“We are in the process of forming the Kapit association and we are getting a corporate sponsor.
“We will also invite Tan Sri Masing to launch the junior development programme for girls in October,” he told The Borneo Post.
“Kapit is a big division with so many communities – Iban, Kelabit, Kayan, Kenyah and Orang Ulu.
“The girls there are physically tough and strong because of the environment,” noted Song.
He believed that SRU and Kapit Division Rugby Association can unearth many good players for the future Malaysia Games (Sukma) teams.
“We are scouting for more potential players to represent Sarawak in Sukma Johor in 2020.”
Song also commended the Kuching Rugby Football Club ( KRFC) for taking the initiative to host the recent KRFC Ladies Sevens rugby tournament at the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field.
Hunters A were crowned the Cup champions of the six- team inaugural tournament while the Plate was won by SMK Muara Tuang C.
“This is a very good development for women’s rugby and I hope that similar tournaments can also be organised by other divisions,” he said, adding that SRU would support and sanction such tournaments.
