-

SARIKEI: Sarikei MP Andrew Wong Ling Biu has suggested that the Community College here offer agriculture technology and training courses considering that agriculture sector is the economic strength of Sarikei.

Wong made this suggestion to a group of lecturers from the college who paid him a courtesy call at his office here on Tuesday.

He was made to understand the college currently offers culinary and computer courses.

Wong felt it was high time the college provide agriculture technology and training courses which is in line with the Sarawak government’s plan to develop Sarikei and Meradong into the state’s food basket.

Moreover, despite being one of the state’s main agricultural hubs, most of the local farmers here were still using traditional method, he added.

Earlier, the lecturers briefed Wong on the programmes offered by Sarikei Community College and also invited him to be the college’s chairman.

The lecturers also informed Wong of the proposal to set up a Volunteers Brigade whose main objectives were to inculcate leadership skill, caring attitude and volunteerism spirit among the college students, they said.

The brigade would work closely with the community to assist the less fortunate people and create a harmonious living atmosphere, they added.
