June 29 mention for Nigerian duo charged with drug possession

KUCHING: The magistrate’s court here set June 29 this year for further mention for two Nigerian men charged with drug possession.

Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng fixed the date pending the completion of a chemist report.

The accused, Oguzie Ifesinachi Bobby and Akomas Anthony Ekele, are alleged to have been in possession of 0.48 grammes of Ecstasy and 1.09 grammes of cannabis in a room of a budget hotel at Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui here around 12.30am on May 4 this year.

They are each charged under Section 12( 2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12( 3) of the same Act, which carries a fine of not more than RM100,000 or imprisonme­nt not exceeding five years, or both upon conviction.

Both also face a charge under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a fine of RM20,000 or imprisonme­nt not exceeding five years, or both upon conviction.

The court denied the two accused bail and ordered them to be further remanded in prison pending the next hearing.

Meanwhile, in the same courtroom, an Indonesian man was jailed for six months after he pleaded guilty to retaining a stolen motorcycle.

The accused, Dinding, admitted to committing the offence on June 9 this year at Kampung Padang Pan in Bau. The bike belonged to a villager who had reported it stolen on March 26, 2017.

He was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between six months and five years, and a fine, upon conviction.

The court also ordered Dinding to be handed over to the Immigratio­n Department for deportatio­n upon the completion of his sentence.
