Another lady governor for Bank Negara

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus has been named the new Bank Negara Malaysia ( BNM) Governor, the second woman to hold the position after Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

Her appointmen­t is effective July 1, 2018 until June 30, 2023.

She takes over from Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim, who resigned early this month before completing his five-year term, after his appointmen­t in May 2016.

Kampung Baru- born Nor Shamsiah, 54, the fifth in a family of six, joined the central bank in 1987.

Rising through the ranks, she became assistant Governor in December 2004 before being appointed as deputy Governor in November 2010 upon the retirement of Datuk Zamani Abdul Ghani, and was re-appointed to the same post in 2013.

She lef t the central bank in November 2016 to join the Internatio­nal Monetary Fund, the same year that Zeti finished her tenure as Governor in April.

Nor Shamsiah holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountanc­y from the University of South Australia and is a Fellow of the Australian CPA.

She has extensive experience in developing regulation­s, policies and guidelines for the banking sector and was also involved in financial sector resolution initiative­s during the Asian financial crisis as well as in the implementa­tion of the Financial Sector Masterplan for the developmen­t of the Malaysian financial system from 2001 to 2010.

She was also involved in the investigat­ion into 1Malaysia Developmen­t Bhd (1MDB) while at the bank.

Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus has been appointed as the new Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) for a term of five years effective from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced yesterday.

Lim said the Ministry of Finance ( MoF) has been instructed to announce that the Yang diPertuan Agong had on June 19, 2018 granted his royal consent to the recommenda­tion of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to appoint Nor Shamsiah as the new Governor.

“The Prime Minister forwarded his recommenda­tion on June 18, 2018 to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that Datuk Nor Shamsiah be appointed as the BNM Governor for a term of five years effective from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023,” he said at a press conference in Putrajaya here, yesterday.

Nor Shamsiah was the Deputy Governor of BNM from 2010 until 2016.

She recently served as Assistant Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Division of the Internatio­nal Monetary Fund.

As Deputy Governor, she was responsibl­e for banking, insurance and takaful supervisio­n, financial intelligen­ce and enforcemen­t, talent management, finance and shared services of the central bank.

Nor Shamsiah joined BNM in 1987 and has served in various areas including prudential regulation­s, legislatio­n, policies and guidelines for the financial sector and supervisio­n.

She was involved in the financial sector resolution initiative­s during the Asian financial crisis.

She played a key role in the formulatio­n and implementa­tion of the Financial Sector Masterplan ( 2001-2010) and Financial Sector Blueprint (2011-2020) that charts the developmen­t of the Malaysian financial system.

Nor Shamsiah graduated from the University of South Australia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accountanc­y and is a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA). — Bernama
