Hashers from 20 countries to run in Kuching

KUCHING: More than 2,000 hashers from 20 countries will participat­e in the second Asia Pacific Hash Run from July 5- 8.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said 60 per cent of the total runners are foreigners.

“With the participat­ion of foreign countries, we see this as a very important event to promote tourism and help the industry players. Knowing the importance of the event, the ministry is greatly involved with it,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said the hashers may also bring along their family members for leisure.

The foreign hashers include those from China ( 609), United States (120), Australia ( 52), Indonesia (410), Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, India, Canada, Japan, Korea, and the Philippine­s.

Some 530 hashers from Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah are also participat­ing.

Abdul Karim said some of the participan­ts are already in Sarawak visiting other divisions and experienci­ng the beautiful scenery.

Among the venues for the event are Matang Wildlife Centre – which will cover a 30km run, Damai Resort, and Fort Margherita.

He thanked Kuching City Hash Club for successful­ly bringing the event to Sarawak.

The first edition of the Asia Pacific Hash Run was held in Bali, Indonesia in 2014.

The second edition was supposed to be held in New Zealand in 2016, but was cancelled at the eleventh hour.
