Retiree hopes to meet victims of road accident that happened 20 years ago
SIBU: A 60-year old retired lorry driver is looking for the victims of a serious road accident which happened here about 20 years ago.
Chung Nguong Chew said he hoped the victims are in good health.
“All I want to know is how they are doing nowadays. All my best regards to them,” he added.
According to Chung, on May 3, 1999, as he was driving his lorry to Selangau on a routine trip, he came across an accident at Mile 25, Oya Road at about 3pm.
Seven persons were inside a four-wheel- drive vehicle which had turned turtle by a roadside bush.
One of them, a man, suffered serious head injuries. Three sustained minor injuries while the other three passengers were unhurt.
Chung said he was among the first to arrive at the scene. One of the victims had f lagged him down.
Chung, with the help of the three who were unhurt, carried the injured to his lorry.
Besides the seriously injured, the three with minor injuries were children – two boys and a girl.
“I can still remember that the man was groaning in agony as I rushed all the victims to the hospital.
“When I was about to reach the hospital, I saw an ambulance on its way to the accident site but I figured the ambulance had come a bit late.” Chung recalled.
After sending the injured to the hospital, Chung returned to the scene and sent another passenger to the hospital for outpatient treatment.
The following day, Chung went to the hospital to visit the man, but a nurse told him the man had already been transferred to the Normah Medical Specialist Centre ( NMSC) in Kuching.
A few days later, Chung went to NMSC but was told by a nurse that the man had gone to seek treatment in China.
“Since then, I have not heard of the man,” Chung said.
A few years ago, Chung heard that the man had moved to Brunei.
Besides that accident, Chung had also rendered a helping hand to other victims of road accidents.
For his deeds, Sibu United Chinese Association had given Chung an award.
