MIRI: Sarawak Medical Services Union ( SMSU) will go on a membership drive to register new members.

Vice president of SMSU Omar Bahrein Unin said there were a total of ten branches throughout the state under the SMSU.

“Todate, some 8,000 civil servants who serve with health department of Sarawak have registered with SMSU as members.

“Those yet to do so are welcome to register with SMSU in order to enjoy the member benefits such as group insurance with low premium for members and their families, education incentives for the members who excel in their academic achievements, allowance for hospital admission and retirement fund.”

Omar who is also secretary for the Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) Sarawak branch pointed out that SMSU was the earliest union registered with Trade Union Affairs Department in 1962.

“SMSU’s membership is open to all civil servants who work with health department of Sarawak.

“We are also affiliated to Cuepacs and Malaysia Trade Union Congress ( MTUC),” he said.

He added that the union subscribed to the concept of Tripartite in fighting for the members’ interest between the employers and the government.

Thus, he hoped employers would give their support for their staff to involve in activities organised by SMSU.

He noted that some department heads misunderstood the objectives of SMSU and were reluctant to release their staffs to join the union’s programme.
