Sabah ministry to propose regulations on crustaceans

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry will propose to the state cabinet to regulate the harvest and sale of crustaceans.

Its minister Junz Wong said a working paper on policies to regulate price and sizes of lobsters and crabs sold to restaurants and open markets would be presented to the cabinet soon.

“I think it is really important for policies to restrict the sizes ( and weight) to at least 500 grammes for lobster before selling it to restaurants and open markets.

“Crab sizes also need to be limited,” he told reporters after visiting the Kota Kinabalu fi sh market here yesterday.

Wong said small lobsters weighing around 100 to 300 grammes each were currently priced at RM120-RM180 per kg.

During his visit at the market, the minister found crabs selling for RM30-RM40 per kg compared to RM60 kg yesterday.

He also said his ministry would study policies on exporting crabs of large sizes in comparison to smaller crabs sold for local consumption. — Bernama
