Adopt more environmen­tfriendly lifestyle — Tiong

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will work closely with the Education Department to educate the younger generation on a lifestyle that is more environmen­t-friendly.

“One of the areas that school children should know about is the functional­ity of Kemuyang sanitary landfi ll,” its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said, adding that the importance of saving Mother Earth should be emphasized.

“The council is looking forward to collecting used fishtails and banners from various local advertisin­g companies to turn them into recycled bags in collaborat­ion with Single Mothers Associatio­n,” he said when chairing a full council meeting here yesterday.

Earlier, he told the meeting that various dialogue sessions and awareness campaigns on “Say No To Plastic Bags” were carried out since early this year.

He urged the public to support the biodegrada­ble plastic bag campaign and opt for recycled bags.

According to him, dialogue with the proprietor­s of supermarke­ts and department­al stores will be carried out regularly to monitor and gauge the campaign’s success.

“Notices to remind the public to avoid using non-biodegrada­ble plastic bags should be displayed at business premises’ payment counters.

“An action plan will also be formulated to promote usage of biodegrada­ble plastic bags as a new lifestyle practice among the public,” he reiterated.

On the proposed paid parking system in Chiew Siik Hiong Road, Medan commercial area and those surroundin­g Everwin Supermarke­t in Sungai Merah, the chairman disclosed that it will start from July 1.
