No issue of duplication of power by CEP — Syed Saddiq
KUALA LUMPUR: There is no issue or problem of power duplication by the Council of Eminent Persons ( CEP), said Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman.
Syed Saddiq, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, said in a media statement yesterday that the CEP’s scope of power was merely to advise the Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet.
“If the advice given is felt to be inappropriate, then the Cabinet member has the right to reject or urge that the suggestion or advice given by the CEP be improved.
“Each action or decision by the CEP cannot be approved by itself. So there is no issue that the CEP members are more powerful than the Cabinet and they too cannot act as they like and exceed the power provided,” he said.
He was commenting on the suggestion by Rembau Member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin who asked the government to dissolve the CEP immediately as it was seen to act not merely as the advisor, but also intervened in government matters.

Syed Saddiq said the duration of power given to the CEP was merely for 100 days and during that period, the CEP had submitted many ideas and suggestions to the Malaysian government.
“The appointment of CEP members was also based on meritocracy and administrative experience. I believe Malaysians can evaluate the performance of the CEP in a transparent and fair manner so that the noble efforts of the personalities in the CEP could be turned into an inspiration, and not politicised,” he said. — Bernama
