Four schools to represent south zone in Consumers Club Interactiv­e Challenge

KUCHING: SMK Kuching High, SMK Datuk Patinggi Abdul Gapor, SMK Tun Abang Hj Openg and SMK Pesantren Abdul Taib Mahmud will represent the South Zone at the Sarawak-level School Consumers Club Consumers Interactiv­e Challenge 2018 on Aug 19.

This follows the achievemen­ts of the four secondary schools which won fi rst, second, third and fourth place respective­ly in the challenge for South Zone, which was held at Reservoir Park here yesterday.

The champion, SMK Kuching High, took home RM200, trophy and certificat­es while second and third place winners SMK Datuk Patinggi Abdul Gapor and SMK Tun Abang Hj Openg took RM160 and RM120 respective­ly in addition to trophy and certificat­es.

According to the director of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (Sarawak) Dato Stanley Tan, the challenge was participat­ed by 27 secondary schools and 108 students.

He said the challenge for North Zone was held on July 19 involving 14 schools, with the top four winners chosen to compete at the Sarawak level.

“The challenge has chosen the best eight schools to compete at Sarawak-level on Aug 19 and, the school which emerges as the champion will represent Sarawak at the national level,” he told a press conference after presenting prizes to the winners, witnessed by Kuching District deputy education officer Chen Fei Ming.

Tan also called on all schools in Sarawak to set up their respective Consumers Club to expand consumeris­m programmes among students.

“The Consumers Club Interactiv­e Challenge, which was set up in 1996, is one of the platforms of the ministry in collaborat­ion with Sarawak Education Department to provide students with knowledge on consumeris­m.

“Wewant ourstudent­s to be aware and become smart consumers,” he said, and expressed the hope that more schools would participat­e in the challenge next year.
