SMK Chung Hua Miri emerges champion in quiz competition
KUCHING: SMK Chung Hua ( CF) Miri emerged champion in the fourth annual Science and Maths Quiz (SMQ) 2018 organised by UCSI University Sarawak’s Centre for Pre- U Studies ( CPU) at UCSI Hotel here recently.
According to a press release, the secondary school, which was represented by Martin Wong Jing Sheng, Koo Jin Chu, and Wong Shyi Tung, won a RM45,000 bursary as well as RM1,000 cash.
The trio beat 58 teams from 24 secondary schools from Sarawak in the state-level competition.
SMK Batu Lintang team represented by Lim Siang Hong, Galvin Lee Kuan Sian and Edward Ngui Shi Jie was first runner-up winning a RM30,000 bursary and RM500 cash.
The second runner-up spot was also won by another SMK Batu Lintang team comprising Ian Chiew Juin Liang, Raymond Ting Siong Lee and Marco Sim Kah How who received a RM15,000 bursary and RM300 cash.
A consolation prize of RM100 cash and a two- day, one night voucher from Merdeka Palace Hotel and Suites were awarded to fourth place winners Cindy Ngun, Michelle Wong Hui Hui and Carina Loi Jing from SMK Methodist Sibu.
This year’s SMQ was officiated by state Education Department’s co- curriculum, uniformed team and STEM supervisor Norman Suhaili.
Also present were UCSI University Sarawak Campus chief operating officer Mukvinder Kaur Sandhu and SMQ project chairman Li Joon Teck.
During the event, CPU lecturer, assistant prof Azizan Yatim also conducted a ‘Flipped Classroom’ training session for teachers whose schools were represented in the Science and Maths Quiz.
A campus tour was also conducted for the visiting teachers and students.
UCSI Sarawak’s Foundation Studies Programme in Science is the perfect first step for students who are keen on furthering their studies in Medicine and Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Architecture, Engineering, Social Sciences and Applied Science programmes.
