SEB presents scholarshi­ps to 71 outstandin­g students

KUCHING: Sarawak Energy presented 2018 Scholarshi­ps Awards to a total of 71 recipients as part of the company’s ongoing effort to help develop Sarawak’s talent yesterday.

Of the number, 57 are outstandin­g students about to enter college or university and 14 are employees undergoing continuing education programme while still at work.

SEB group chief executive officer ( CEO) Sharbini Suhaili said the power utility and energy developer has committed RM8 million annually for the scholarshi­p programme which is on its fifth year.

“To date, we have contribute­d about RM24 million into this investment initiative which has benefitted over 400 scholars over four years,” he said when addressing the scholars, employees and guests at the presentati­on ceremony held at a leading hotel here.

The recipients, he added, were selected from 330 applicants based on their academic performanc­e and leadership in extra- curricular activities.

He pointed out that Sarawak Energy is of the belief that the best investment in the future of Sarawak is in education and young people, whether it is through scholarshi­ps or educationa­l programmes for projectaff­ected communitie­s.

“This provides the best path to success and we are privileged to be able to play a key role in securing their future,” he said.

“To realise our mission of becoming a regional powerhouse and employer of choice, we need to attract the best talent in Sarawak and develop our workforce into a high performing team who can compete with the best companies in the region,” he added.

Sharbini emphasised that they believe the annual scholarshi­ps are social investment that will generate strong returns, not only for the company but also Sarawak.

“This is our commitment towards supporting and developing potential talent and the next generation of leaders. Sarawak Energy scholars will become part of the high performanc­e workforce needed to fulfill future manpower needs,” he said.

He urged the recipients to excel in their studies and looked forward to some of them becoming part of SEB’s team in the future.

Besides the scholarshi­p programme, Sarawak Energy’s other initiative­s to spot, attract and recruit the best young talents include internship placement and campus ambassador activities.
